The EPA documents the mosquito life cycle as typically taking up to two weeks from egg to adult, with a range from as little as 4 days in hot conditions to as long as a month in cool ones. Now play that forward. Suppose your yard is treated today and the treatment performs perfectly on every adult present. If any water on or near the property is still producing, eggs laid before the treatment are already developing, and in midsummer heat some of those larvae become flying, biting adults inside of a week.
A 10 to 14 day return visit lands inside that replacement window. The new generation emerges into a yard where the resting habitat still carries residual and where a technician is about to sweep the water again. A 30 day return visit, by contrast, gives the population two full cycles to rebuild, which is functionally starting over.
Clock two: residual fade
Barrier treatments work because the active ingredient persists on treated foliage after drying, so mosquitoes that land there over the following weeks pick up a lethal dose. But the residual is not permanent, and honest programs plan around three things that erode it:
- Sunlight. Pyrethroids photodegrade; the same summer sun that speeds up breeding wears down the barrier.

- Growth. Plants keep growing in summer. New foliage is untreated foliage, and in June a shrub can put out a lot of it in two weeks.
University of Kentucky extension's homeowner guidance in ENTFACT-005 makes the same point in fewer words: residual applications to shaded vegetation are effective but need to be reapplied periodically.
Why not weekly? Why not monthly?
Weekly treatment overshoots for most properties: you pay for applications while the previous residual is still strong, and you put more product into the yard than the biology requires. Monthly undershoots: both clocks expire around the halfway mark, leaving one to two unprotected weeks per cycle, which is exactly when the "it stopped working" calls happen. Heavy-pressure properties, shaded and damp with lots of vegetation, sit at the 10 day end; open, dry, well-drained yards can run at 14.

Does rain right after treatment ruin it?
Once the application has dried, normal rain is expected and tolerated. Heavy, prolonged rain can shorten residual life, which is why services watch forecasts and why our guarantee covers re-treats between visits.
Can I stretch to 21 or 30 days to save money?
You can schedule anything, but the biology does not negotiate: a new generation can emerge in one to two weeks and the residual fades on roughly the same schedule. Stretching the interval trades money for unprotected weeks. A season plan prices the correct rhythm honestly instead of pretending a monthly visit does the same job.
Is the 10 to 14 day cycle the same everywhere?
